Raw Oatmeal

We all know that oatmeal has some amazing health benefits, but did you know you can even eat it raw? 

Where do you find raw oatmeal?  At the health food store, of course.  Usually it is sold in the bulk items.  Check the label; It will tell you if it’s raw or not.  

Be sure that you don’t get instant oats, as they have been stripped of a lot of the nutrients and are more prone to spike blood sugar levels.  In fact, the closer you keep the oats to their whole grain form, the more nutrient dense they become. 

So, raw rolled oats would be better than instant oats,

 and steel cut oats would be better than rolled oats,

and oat groats would be the best of all!


All forms of oats can be soaked rather than cooked, so experiment if you are able and see which oats you prefer.  Personally, I love the chewiness of the oat groats! 

Rolled oats just need to be soaked for a few minutes in warm water (not hot), and they are ready to use.  (Rolled oats generally aren’t raw since they need to undergo a heat process in order to flatten them, but if that’s all you’ve got, it’s better than instant!)

Steel-cut oats take a little longer to saok…maybe a couple of hours. 

Oat groats you will probably want to soak overnight.

Once they are soaked, you can add all sorts of things to get a variety of flavors.

Here’s some combinations, I especially like:

 Coconut milk, honey, shredded coconut

Fresh almond milk, vanilla, stevia, almond extract, crushed almonds

Water, agave, cinnamon, nutmeg, raisins

Bananas, crushed walnuts, cinnamon, maple syrup

Keep experimenting.  There are endless options to this versatile, delicious grain!

I just fixed my first bowl of oatmeal. I used steal cut oats. I have never been a fan of oatmeal. I even dreaded trying this, but I wanted to try something new for lunch. I put dates, agave, cinnamon, nutmeg,with a little bit of water that was leftover from soaking. I am a first timer on all this raw stuff, so learning how to do stuff has been a little tuff. I just wanted to say that the oatmeal was SO good. I think that my taste buds have been opened up to a whole new kind of taste. Going without sweets and soda and all the junk and strictly eating raw/live foods has made the simplest of a combination taste so flavorful! This has not been as hard as I thought it would be. It has been exciting!!
